Shop to make a difference.

The Gokhale Foundation’s mission is to be a force for good in two ways. The foundation promotes and supports local craftspeople. Anything that you buy at our store is handcrafted by artisans that have honed their skills over several generations. Second, the foundation helps underprivileged children by providing educational resources and supporting local schools.

Our founder, Poulomi Gokhale, is greatly inspired by the diversity of talent that India has held on to for centuries and a strong advocate for empowerment through education. By shopping at our store, you not only own a beautiful example of handcrafted talent but also make an impact by supporting local artisans and helping a child in need.

"We must give a voice to those who have none"

-Mother Teresa

Each of our products is brought to you from the hands and hearts of Indian artisans, and the profits from each of these purchases go directly to add warmth back to the lives of the underprivileged. Gokhale Foundation thus works towards amplifying the voices of local craftspersons to showcase the beauty of their work and then to give back to the community by empowering impoverished children.

We hope that by funding dietary requirements and providing educational support to the underprivileged children in our society, we may help them to have a brighter future.

The Gokhale Foundation has partnered with a rural community school and an urban educational centre. Every rupee you spend on your purchases from Gokhale Foundation will go a long way towards empowering local craftspersons as well as in assisting deprived children.

Shri Pandurang Mantri Kendra

The Dr. Hermann Gmeiner Social Centre works towards combating the alarming problems faced by disadvantaged children in need. The centre caters to the betterment and development of sixty children with a provision of services to look after their health, nutritional food requirements, education, counselling and rehabilitation.

The children are equipped with additional coaching, supervised study skill development and other facilities, under the guidance and supervision of the Project Coordinator and two lady social workers. Some of the activities organized for the children include candle making, stitching, painting, art and craft. To ensure the recreation of the children from time to time, excursions and picnics are arranged for them with optimum care and security.

Before joining the centre, the children are often unkempt, with unhealthy habits, prone to malnutrition and may have addictions such as smoking or sniffing cobbler’s glue owing to their disadvantaged environment.
We take pride to report that a complete holistic transformation takes place among the children after joining the centre.

The children are educated with the basics of personal hygiene and are provided with essentials such as soap, combs, hair-oil, shoes and school uniforms with a locker to keep all their belongings.

A thorough medical check-up is carried out for each child and various immunizations and vaccinations are provided to them by a doctor affiliated with the centre.

Lunch is provided at the centre keeping in mind the nutritional requirements of the children.

Snacks are given in the Evening before the children leave the centre.

Now, the children attend semi English schools and are given a holistic education to enable them to freely interact with other children from mainstream society.

Gram Prabodhini
A school for community

With a view to bringing about transformation not only in the students but in the whole community around the school, Gram Prabhodhini, a school for the rural area-was founded at village Salumbre in 1991.

Though located within a distance of only ten kilometres from the Pune-Mumbai highway, these villages stood miles away from development with no provisions for secondary education available for the inhabiting children. As a result, there was emigration from the area to nearby towns and cities.

Today Gram Prabodhini runs a secondary school from standard V to X, recognized by the Government of Maharashtra. Education at Gram Prabodhini emphasises on basic study skills to be developed among students, as they learn through a project-oriented method and with an active application of that learning in their everyday life.

The school has proved to be a glimmer of hope, especially for the girl students in the area, who were earlier deprived of secondary education opportunities. To develop basic self-study skills a ‘Reading and Writing’ project was undertaken, under which every student was encouraged to read about 150 books per year. Personality Development Camps give students a chance to study elocution, dramatics, swimming, cooking and a plethora of other skills.

With our mission so far, around 160 girls and 220 boys have successfully completed their education up to SSC level. Around 2000 students have pursued their studies up to post-graduation. About the same number have completed technical courses like ITI after passing SSC. Around 125 students have opted for short vocational courses as well.

Gram Prabodhini continues to strive to offer remarkable opportunities to the children in this local vicinity to stay in their own villages and receie the skills and education required for the development of their community.
